Grade: 7th (7F-7G-7İ)

1st   week observation

We observed 3 different classes but they were all  7th  grades. In the first class, teacher entered the classroom and a typical dialogue happened. She created a silence by raising her voice and gave a sign for the activity. She used usually simple language while she was speaking. She used both target language and mother tongue. Moreover; sentences that she used were short and clear such as ‘kitaplarımızı açalım,okey let’s read, however the sentences were mostly mixed with two languages or a translation. During the class she gave the lecture based on the coursebook, she didnt use any viual or auditory materials. The board was rarely used in the class.
While she was talking she realized that one of the student was absent. He got injured the previous week. Some students laughed at his situation. When students talked about their friends sarcastically teacher scolded them and she told them ‘you shouldn’t talk about your friend in such a bad manner. You should support him in rainy day.’ Then, she turned back to the lesson and she asked a question about the paragraph and a girl answered and teacher gave a positive feedback in mother tongue. She sometimes walked around the class and checked students if they were writing or not but she mainly sat down on her chair in front of the class. She asked a question to a student but she even didn’t know what they were talking about. The teacher reminded her like ‘page .. act ..’ after that, student answered her question.Teacher this time asked the class does everyone agree with Cansu? And translating this question ‘herkes cansuyla aynı mı düşünüyor?’. The 2nd class she talked about the same topic. This week, she focused on reading a passage. She asked students to read some sentences aloud firstly, and then translating one by one. The 3rd class was so reluctunt to participate in  the lesson. Thus, in this class mostly teacher read the sentences and translated them. Then T wrote the unknown words on the board and told their meanings.

2nd  week observation:

Teacher entered the classroom and greeted the class. She tried to keep a slince. In the beginning of the lesson she said that she was ill and she couldn’t speak with high tone of voice. So, she asked them to be calm and engaged with the lesson. She told them to start the activitiy on the book directly after this greeting session. It was a writing activitiy. Stdudents wrote a paragraph about Barış Manço benefiting from the chart on the book. Teacher asked ss to read and write their sentences.T’s instructiıons were simple and short.’please read one by one’. She repeated instructions in mother tongue. She didnt sit in the same place she walked around the class and sometimes she sat the desks of students. In listening activity teacher read the listening transcription.
Okey now listen and find who is talking.Do you know something about Walt Disney?
Now I am reading text and you will find who is talking.
Teacher’s voice quality was good, ss could understand. However, there was no sign to end the activity from the teacher. In the 2nd class teacher wrote some words on the board and their past forms with ss.T wrote the present form and ss told the past form. T wrote the syntax of English to explain ss that ‘Enlish is different from Turkish. When we create sentences the order of the sentence should be different. (s-v-o)’ .T then gave some time for ss to write the sentences in correct forms. Then one by one they came to the board and wrote their sentences. In other class, teacher talked about the same topic on the same page of the coursebook. They did the same activities, with same method.

REFLECTION:

We think that teacher manages and contolls the class and shouting and speaking strictly. This creates silence but it does not last a long time. Activities are always done in the same way, with same methods. So the attention of ss is quickly distracted. Thus, she had better adjust activities for the lesson according students’ attention. Furthermore; she had better pay attention to pre-while-post stages of activities. It is necessary to arouse students interest and activate their schemata. She can ask some questions about what they know about the topic or she can ask them to work in pair. She does not do any pair/group work which is a must for our classes. She should demonstrate rather than explain. Because it will be more catchy and memorable. One of the things we observed is instructions of the teacher. She uses simple and short sentences. They are logical and clear. However, we did not like her way of repeating instructions. She gives (translates) instructions in (to) mother tongue after target language. She mostly makes eye-contact with the students, while she never uses any gestures or mimics to make the instructions or the lesson clearer. The use of body language is rare. There is no use of visual aids. The listening activities are mostly skipped, there is no auditory material that she uses. We have not understood the stages, because the lessons were so monotonous. The greeting, mostly scolding or shouting in the class to mak a silence, then opening the book and reading the passages or answering the questions. There is no warm-up stage, presentation or post part which makes the class so boring.

According to the questions on the school experience file; pg.15
1-In your opinion which three elements contribuetd more to the lesson?
-The short and clear instructions.
-Giving the instructions in target language
-She makes eye-contact and check students comprehension
2-Which elements had a negative impact on the lesson?
The same methods, the smae way of teaching without any other materials. No use of gestures, mimics or body language. Always explaining rather than demonstration. Lack of goup/pair work which means no need for communication in the class
3-What are the most important factors for you personally when giving instructions?
-Demonstration, Voice of tone, Rythm, use of gestures and body language. It should be in English mainly but can be translated to Turkish sometimes. It should be clear, simple and adjusted to learner’s level.
4-What will you incorporate into your own teaching after doing this observation task?
We will be more careful about giving instuctions. We are going to pay attention to our gestures and body. The stages of the lesson will be more smooth and fun. In every step, we let the students enjoy the class, and learn something.
